The Olentangy Liberty High School Swim Team competed this past weekend at the Central Ohio District Championships held at Bowling Green State University Cooper Natatorium. They qualified 2 relays and 6 individual events that will be represented at the Ohio High School Swimming State Championships held at Canton McKinley’s CT Branin Natatorium on Friday (Girls) February 25th and Saturday (Boys) February 26th.
“We had a great meet! We wanted to go out there, race, and qualify as many as possible into the State meet. It all came together at the right time,” Coach Ebie mentioned.
Boys hit the pool first where sophomore Hudson Williams set the tone for the day. Taking 1st place overall in the 200 IM and setting a new meet record with a time of 1:48.34. He followed up this fantastic performance by taking 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 56.39. “Hudson had an excellent meet! We really wanted him to use his athleticism off the walls and keep his stroke rate efficient. He did just that and qualified both of his individual events into the State Championship meet,” said Coach Ebie. Hudson was later joined by his teammate senior Christian Hosler who qualified in the 50 Free placing 4th (21.11) and the 100 Butterfly placing 7th (51.45). The Patriots qualified two relays for State placing 4th in the 200 Free Relay (1:25.67) and the 400 Free Relay (3:07.73) led by Gavin Weis, Aiden Gaier, Christian Hosler and Hudson Williams. In Diving, freshman Kaden Springfield finished 1st with 563.65pts and junior Anthony Sciulli finished 4th with 501.40pts both punching their tickets to Canton as well.
The Patriot boys also set a number of personal records on the day. Junior Gavin Weis finished 14th in the 200 IM (1:45.80) and 12th in the 500 Free (4:54.26). Sophomore Aiden Gaier finished 18th in the 50 Free (22.34) and 15th in the 100 Free (48.41). Freshman Jack Franz finished 24th (1:50.61) and 13th in the 500 Free (4:57.27). Sophomore Keegan McCauley finished 21st in the 100 Fly (54.66). Freshman Mason Miller finished 18th in the 200 IM (2:03.78). And in the 100 Backstroke, sophomore Isaac Wolfe finished 21st (58.32) and freshman Noah Rumburg finished 16th (56.26). The Medley Team of Isaac Wolfe, Mason Miller, Keegan McCauley and Chris Patterson finished 11th overall (1:41.09). The Boys Team finished 5th overall.
On the girls side, sophomore Morgan Hofmeister qualified for state in both the 200 IM finishing 11th (2:09.86) and 7th in the 500 free (5:07.88). The Girls 200 Medley Relay fell .01 second short of qualifying for State. “At the beginning of the season, Coaches Rachel Waltman, Caroline Racke, Peter Krosnosky and myself talked to Nina Racke, Morgan Hofmeister, Kirin Loughrey, and Meggie Gehring about a goal we had in mind. We challenged the 4 of them to work really hard this season, especially their kick. They put in an incredible effort this season and in this meet, and while we fell just short of our end goal we hope this lights a fire for next year. We are so proud of this group.” Stated Coach Ebie.
The Lady Patriots swam their best meet of the season under the Sunday Night pool lights, also setting a number of personal records. Junior Kirin Loughrey finished 18th in the 100 Free (54.02) and 14th in the 100 Back (59.61) Sophomore Nina Racke finished 15th in the 50 Free (24.89) and 17th in the 100 Free (53.89).
